The most popular DIY kitchen improvements this autumn

Simple DIY kitchen updates for your home this autumn

September marks the start of another school year. Over 9 million children in the UK attend school, and around 4.4 Summer is a busy time for many of us, especially those with school aged children. At the beginning of the long summer holidays, there is the challenge of how to fill those long weeks stretching ahead of us. But soon they begin to fly by too fast towards Back to School in September.

So for many of us, not much gets done around the house during summer. And as autumn begins to beckon, it seems like a good time to catch up with some home improvements. This doesn’t have to mean huge changes. Just a few simple DIY tweaks here and there can make a big difference.

So in this article we suggest a few popular DIY kitchen improvements that you may want to consider this autumn.

Repaint the kitchen walls

A fresh coat of paint is a very quick and easy DIY kitchen job that will give your kitchen an instant facelift. Whether you stick to the same colour as it is now, or do something completely different, it will make a big difference to the look and feel of your kitchen.

Popular kitchen colours for 2025 include bright colours such as sunshine yellow, softer tranquil blues, and a host of more earthy tones such as greens, browns and burgundy. So when choosing a paint colour, why not think outside the box and experiment with something a little bit different.

Also decide whether you want to mix or match your paint colour with your kitchen cabinets and other kitchen fixtures and fittings. Multi colour kitchens – such as shown below – can be very striking and give your kitchen a lift.

Replace your kitchen cabinet doors

If your kitchen cabinets are looking rather jaded but you don’t have the time or money to replace them, it’s worth checking the quality of the carcasses i.e. the insides of the cabinets. If they are still in good condition inside, a quicker and cheaper option would be to go for replacement kitchen doors. This is a fairly straightforward DIY kitchen task which can transform the look and feel of your kitchen..

DIY Homefit supply several ranges of replacement kitchen doors including Bella Vinyl Wrapped, Flat Slab and Budget kitchen doors. All our replacement kitchen doors are available in a wide variety of colours and finishes, so you should be able to find the perfect design to bring your kitchen back to life.

When replacing kitchen cabinet doors, you can experiment with colour just the same as with wall paint. Why not consider two contrasting colours of replacement kitchen doors – as shown below – for an elegant and contemporary feel.

Fit new kitchen worktops

Another relatively straightforward – and economical – DIY kitchen improvement is to update your kitchen worktops. In most cases, it should only take a day or two to remove your old worktops from the tops of your kitchen cabinets and replace them with the new ones.

Never underestimate the significant impact that kitchen worktops can have on your kitchen. If they are worn, faded or damaged this can make the whole of your kitchen look tired and tatty. But a quick worktop replacement can completely transform your kitchen for menial effort.

DIY Homefit supplies some fabulous ranges of kitchen worktops by Prima and Axiom. You can find more details on our Kitchen Worktops, Breakfast Bars, Splashbacks and Upstands page. Replace your splashbacks

As well as kitchen worktops, another relatively small DIY kitchen change that can transform your kitchen is to replace the splashbacks. A splashback is a panel behind your cooker or sink that protects walls from everyday stains from cooking or washing.

But not only does a splashback protect walls, it can also be very much a style statement. Splashbacks can be made from a range of different materials, and are also available in a wide variety of shapes, sizes and designs. For example, you could choose a natural-looking material such as wood-effect or stone or go for a high-tech look such as glass, stainless steel or acrylic. Check out the different ranges of splashbacks supplied by DIY Homefit on our Kitchen Worktops, Breakfast Bars, Splashbacks and Upstands page.

You also need to decide whether you want a splashback as a single panel behind your cooker or sink, or to have your splashback as an extension of your kitchen worktop, as shown below. This is known as an upstand, and can help to create a seamless look between the upstand and worktop.

Whatever you choose, be aware that because splashbacks are usually at eye level they can make a huge visual impact on your kitchen.

Change your handles

Last but definitely not least let’s look at one of the simplest DIY kitchen improvements you can make. Handles.

Changing handles or knobs on your kitchen cabinet doors and drawers can be one of the most important improvements to the appearance of your kitchen. It is by no means an afterthought in kitchen design, but one of the key elements of that design.

DIY Homefit supplies some wonderful ranges of kitchen handles and knobs, which you can see on our Handles page here. There are many different styles – including bar handles, bow handles, cup handles and knobs – all available in a range of finishes including metals, wood effect or porcelain. You are bound to find the right combination to add the perfect finishing touch to your kitchen this autumn.
