Lunches they will Love!

Rod Stewart sums it up in the immortalised lyrics of Maggie May “It’s late September and I really should be back at school”. Nothing symbolises September more than the great big Back To School event!

For any parent, this is a major organisational feat, especially for schools where children take their own lunch boxes. If you’re anything like us at DIY Homefit, the school year starts full of good intentions to prepare wonderfully nutritious home-made food for the lunch boxes, then gradually goes downhill as term progresses!

As another school year approaches, we know that we “must try harder” this year and are determined to do better! We reckon that the best way to keep getting good marks in the lunchbox department is to involve the children fully in the process of selecting and preparing lunches.

It’s one of those scenarios where as a parent you need to influence their decision-making in a positive yet subtle way so that they think the delicious healthy lunch ideas are all their own! What better to support this process than to allocate them their own storage area in the kitchen for lunchbox items? Each child could have a portion of a shelf in the fridge for chilled ingredients and also part of a cupboard for everything else.

This will obviously have implications on your kitchen storage so here are some products that may help you to maximise your storage capacity.

Even better, if you are planning a kitchen refurbishment in the near future, then do make sure that you maximise storage space as much as you can.

An ideal way of doing this could be to introduce an island into your kitchen. This can double up as a storage and preparation area. If the logistics work you could then consider allocating part of the island to your children’s lunchbox storage/preparation area.  Giving them their share of responsibility and resources may be the key to keeping on track with healthy lunches all year round.

We hope that your Back to School routine goes well and that you do find a way of scoring top marks with lunchboxes this year. For any kitchen storage needs or inspiration for kitchen refurbishment, look no further than DIY Homefit – custom made DIY Furniture to fit your home.
