Don’t Spend Too Much Time in the Kitchen!

At DIY Homefit we were intrigued to read a recent article in The Telegraph that the more time people spend preparing meals, the greater their risk of health problems linked with heart disease, such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol. This was the conclusion of a recent study, led by Dr Brad Appelhans, of Rush University Medical Centre in Chicago.

The study found that women who spend less time on cooking reduce their risk of developing various conditions by more than a third. This is particularly intriguing given the long-held view that home cooking is healthier than, for example, ready meals. The surprising results could perhaps therefore be due to people either eating bigger portions when they cook for themselves or grazing as they cook. Or some have suggested that the stress of cooking might also be a contributing factor.

We will watch this story and see how it develops, but wanted to focus briefly on the stress aspect mentioned above. If you are planning a kitchen refurbishment this year, ensure that you think through carefully what kind of configuration you want to feel comfortable and relaxed in your kitchen. For example, are you the kind of person who likes company while you are cooking and are happy for guests to wander in and out?  If so, an open plan kitchen may well suit you. If you prefer to keep kitchen and guests separate then go for something more private and enclosed.  The images below show a fantastic example of each of these layouts!
