How to create a sustainable bedroom

Make your bedroom wardrobes eco friendly with help from DIY Homefit

Sustainability is something that is increasingly important to many of us in 2025. So when planning ways to improve our homes, it makes sense also to make them as sustainable as possible. But what does that mean for the bedroom? What kind of things can you do to make your bedroom more sustainable?

Here are five suggestions to create a beautiful and sustainable bedroom.

Choose bedroom wardrobes made from sustainable materials

The more sustainable the material your bedroom wardrobes are made from, the better. There are two main reasons for this.

The first is that not only will they last longer but they will look better for longer, ensuring that your bedroom looks fresh for years to come. Also, you won’t have to think about replacing them for a considerable time, saving you time, energy and money.

The second reason that sustainable bedroom wardrobes are good news is that because they use eco-friendly materials, the amount of waste is reduced and, longer term, less deforestation is needed. For example, one of the main products DIY Homefit uses for our wardrobe doors is high density MDF. which is made with recycled timber and fibre materials.

So, when creating a sustainable bedroom, check what material your bedroom wardrobes are going to be made from to see how eco-friendly it is.

Source bedroom furniture and accessories from local suppliers

If you are buying new bedroom wardrobes or other bedroom furniture, another way to be more sustainable is to source your items from local suppliers wherever possible. If you can buy locally – or at least within the UK – it greatly reduces both the cost and the carbon footprint of goods needing to be transported to you.

At DIY Homefit, all components for our wardrobe doors are sourced from leading manufacturers within the UK. We do not import them from any other countries such as China or Korea.

We can also custom make bedroom wardrobes and wardrobe doors precisely to your measurements, which avoids waste and further reduces the carbon footprint of your bedroom wardrobes.

Reuse and upcycle

When planning to change your bedroom, bear in mind that not everything has to be new. There may be other items in your home that you can upcycle and repurpose as bedroom furniture. Or you may find some ideal items in secondhand shops or on online forums such as Facebook Marketplace. Even if an item needs a bit of a facelift, for example a repaint, it is a much more sustainable option than buying something completely new, particularly if that new item also has to be delivered.

And another option to completely transform your bedroom is to keep your existing bedroom wardrobes and just replace the wardrobe doors. It is much more cost effective to buy replacement wardrobe doors than completely new bedroom wardrobes, and also saves a lot of unnecessary waste if the insides of the wardrobe are still in good usable condition.

At DIY Homefit we supply three ranges of top quality made-to-measure hinged wardrobe doors and also custom built sliding wardrobe doors, all at competitive prices. Choose natural materials for bedding and soft furnishings

You can also make sustainable decisions when getting bedding and soft furnishings for your bedroom. For example, consider not only the materials of the products but also how they are manufactured and produced.

For bedding, look for products made from natural materials such as organic cotton, bamboo, Tencel, wool or recycled feather and down. Also look for organic materials when purchasing mattresses or pillows, as they are often made with memory foam, which is petroleum-based and can potentially affect indoor air quality. Eco-friendly mattresses are made from materials such as natural latex, organic cotton or wool, bamboo and hemp.

Other soft furnishings such as rugs and curtains can often be bought secondhand. Good natural materials for rugs include jute, seagrass, sisal or wool; and for curtains include bamboo, linen, organic cotton and hemp.

Bringing the outside in

One other lovely feature to enhance a sustainable bedroom is to adhere to the trend of bringing the outside in. By having some indoor plants in your bedroom, you will not only improve the aesthetics and ambience of the room but also benefit from their air purifying properties. Indoor plants can help eliminate toxins and pollutants from the air that can derive from furniture and cleaning products. Plants are able to absorb and break down such toxins through their leaves and roots, and release them as harmless by-products.
