Smarten up your spare bedroom before Christmas

Christmas is fast approaching; transform your bedroom!

It seems impossible that Christmas is fast approaching. Just where has 2021 gone?!
In the words of John Lennon, “let’s hope it’s a good one”. Certainly much better than Christmas 2020! Remember all the confusion about who could and could not go where and for how long, and how it all changed at the very last minute?

But this year most of us are working on the basis that we will be able to visit family and friends freely. Which also means that you may be having visitors to stay sometime over the Christmas period, perhaps for the first time in a long time.

If you are out of the habit of having people to stay, it can all feel a bit daunting. But the good news is that you still have plenty of time to prepare.

As a start, why not take a good look at your spare bedroom. Be honest, does it look its best? Probably not! If it’s not been used for guests for the last couple of years, chances are that it’s become a bit of a dumping ground for all kinds of other stuff; or perhaps it now doubles up as a home office.

So in this article we give you five ways to smarten up your spare bedroom before Christmas.

Declutter your spare bedroom

First and foremost, this is the way to get things moving. We just referred to the likelihood of your spare room having become either a multi purpose room or just a junk room when it’s not been used. Now is the time to tackle that!

So take a deep breath and empty out every wardrobe and drawer. Then be ruthless. Anything that you don’t need or want, put it into black bags ready to get rid of later. If there are things that you are keeping but which belong somewhere else, move them now – otherwise they will somehow sneak back into the place they don’t belong.

If your spare bedroom is now doubling up as a home office, take the time to reorganise it accordingly. If possible there need to be clear storage areas in the room for the office items so that it can still function as a spare bedroom as well. In our recent article The multi-functional bedroom, we looked at various ways to do this.

Your spare bedroom should now be looking a lot clearer and less cluttered, ready for further improvements.

Deep clean your spare bedroom

During the decluttering you have an ideal opportunity to deep clean the spare bedroom. If you do this thoroughly now, you will only need to give it a quick spruce up nearer Christmas.

As you empty wardrobes and drawers, and check what’s lurking under the bed, make sure you dust, vacuum, polish and shine every inch of the room and everything in it. You will have the satisfaction of knowing the room is in its best possible condition.

Also check for anything in the room that needs repairing or replacing. For example light bulbs, plugs, window catches etc. It would be great to get these bits and pieces sorted now rather than trying to do it in a rush when your guests are coming.

Replace your wardrobe doors

As you are working on getting your spare bedroom up to scratch, you may realise that the wardrobe doors are really past their best. No matter how much cleaning you do, they still look faded and grubby.

The good news is that you still have time to replace your wardrobe doors before Christmas. It is quick and easy to fit new wardrobe doors. So check out DIY Homefit’s ranges of hinged and sliding wardrobe doors to see what a difference they could make to your spare bedroom.

New wardrobe doors not only make everything look fresher, but can also make your spare bedroom look larger. In particular, sliding wardrobe doors can free up floor space which can be really helpful in a small spare bedroom. Mirrored wardrobe doors can also make the ambience of the room much lighter and brighter as they reflect light around the room.

Give your spare bedroom a fresh coat of paint

As well as new wardrobe doors, a fresh coat of paint can really transform the appearance of your spare bedroom. And if you’re painting your bedroom, you don’t have to stick to the same colours it is now. Have fun with colour! Try some completely different colours, and don’t be afraid to mix and match.

For example in the bedroom pictured below – featuring our flat panel slab replacement wardrobe doors in Valore Fjord and Light Grey – there is a blend of green, cream, grey and brown which works really well.

Replace the soft furnishings in your spare bedroom

Once you have done all the above, you may want to add some finishing touches to your spare bedroom by replacing some of the soft furnishings. Whether this is curtains or blinds, rugs, cushions, bedding or throws, these little details can make all the difference between a functional spare bedroom and a beautiful one.
