Don’t Spend Too Much Time in the Kitchen!

At DIY Homefit we were intrigued to read a recent article in The Telegraph that the more time people spend preparing meals, the greater their risk of health problems linked with heart disease, such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol. This was the conclusion of a recent study, led by Dr Brad Appelhans, of Rush University Medical Centre in Chicago.

Sleeping Beautifully!

At DIY Homefit we enjoyed Christmas and New Year, including the obligatory pantomime. Oh yes we did! We’ve already mentioned Cinderella in another recent blog but another of our favourites is Sleeping Beauty. Imagine waking up after 100 years! What would be the first thing you would want to see? Definitely not a bedroom needing refurbishment we assume.

Kitchen Drawers with a Difference

Every year in Las Vegas, a major event takes place that you may not have heard of before. It’s the “KBIS” – The Kitchen and Bath Industry Show, the world’s largest international tradeshow event dedicated to its industry. KBIS is an inspiring, interactive showcase of new products for kitchens and bathrooms, including kitchen appliances, kitchen cabinets, and kitchen accessories.

Driving Home for Christmas!

It’s that time of year when everyone is all over the place! Everywhere you go there are people. Whether they are shopping or socialising or just out walking, Christmas is definitely not a time to escape people!  At DIY Homefit we confess that we find it fascinating watching groups of people during the festive season and trying to work out how they “belong” together. Are they out and about genuinely enjoying themselves – or just desperately trying to pass the time?!

Sliding Doors

At DIY Homefit we love the film “Sliding Doors”. Just to jog your memory, it’s the one where Gwyneth Paltrow’s life gets split into two parallel universes at the point of her catching or missing a train. The film charts the different paths her life would take in each of those scenarios. Especially at this seasonal time of reflection, it’s fascinating to ponder the great “What If’s” of our lives and wonder how things might have been if we’d either caught or missed our equivalent of that train.

Boxing Day Every Day

As we all know, Boxing Day is the day after Christmas, December 26th. There are various explanations of how the tradition of Boxing Day evolved, but it seems to date back to the Middle Ages and was a day when servants would be given the day off and would receive gifts, known as “Christmas boxes” from their employers. Even now, when gifts are usually given on Christmas Day, Boxing Day is very much part of the Christmas holiday festivities. Most people are lucky enough to have the day off and continue celebrating the season with family and friends.

It Fits!

At DIY Homefit we love Christmas! The lights, the festivities and the general celebratory atmosphere are a refreshing antidote from the day to day cares of life. It is also, of course, pantomime season!  One of our favourites is Cinderella. It has such a combination of fantasy and nostalgia that it never fails to bring a smile to our faces.

Designer Furniture at Affordable Prices!

At DIY Homefit we were fascinated to read in the press recently about a London penthouse being sold for apparently the highest price on record for a single property, even beating the sale of an apartment in One Hyde Park earlier in the year for £140 million.  The apartment, in Clarges Street, is part of a new development that will eventually have access to a wellness spa, swimming pool and cinema!

Bedroom Wardrobes – Fitted or Freestanding?

At DIY Homefit we are often asked a version of the same question. What are the advantages of fitted bedroom wardrobes over freestanding ones? The question was raised again this week by a customer who is moving into a new home with no existing bedroom storage. She had been thinking about buying freestanding wardrobes but also wanted to chat through with us the viability of DIY furniture.

Would Your Kitchen Pass the Home Swap Test?

At DIY Homefit we’re enjoying the new Home Away From Home programme on the BBC. Well worth a look! Presented by the ever-engaging Gloria Hunniford, the programme features two homes whose owners trade places for a few days. As well as staying in each others’ homes, the visitors also have different local activities planned for them during the week so that they can really experience local life. Additionally, the owners leave ingredients and instructions for the visitors to cook and enjoy one of their favourite meals.
